Make yourself a Rabbi and get rid of the Doubt.
2007

Installation as part of ‘The Rear’, the 1st Herzliya Biennale of Contemporary Art. Curated by Joshua Simon. Herzliya, 2007

Make yourself a Rabbi and get rid of the Doubt is an installation centred on a large wooden lightbox that illuminates a black-and-white photograph mounted to a clear acrylic (Plexiglas) sheet. The image shows a circus ring set on a pole, doubled by its reflection in a pond. On top of the lightbox, a metal pole supports a soft sculptural head of a rabbi, sewn from cloth and filled with acrylic fibre. The title quotes Pirkei Avot (Ethics of the Fathers) 1:16 — “Appoint for thyself a Rav; remove yourself from doubt; and do not tithe by guesswork.” The work stages the pull between guidance and uncertainty, spectacle and devotion, image and effigy, asking how authority is pictured and held aloft.
