Lectern
Drawing series 2013-2015

Lecterns is a series of drawings based on found images of lecterns sourced online. The works consider the lectern as a device that stages speech and confers authority on the body behind it—whether to speak, dictate, or preach. It is an ambivalent object: at once intimidating and reassuring, both shield and amplifier. By isolating the furniture from the figure, the series shifts attention to how authority can be built into things, how design choreographs the relation between speaker and audience. In treating the lectern as a stand-in for the voice, the drawings explore the personification of objects and the ways power attaches to them.
